Attended DigitalFilipino 2007 Xmas Party November 30, 2007

Filed under: Interests — jpabellon @ 9:42 pm

Attended the Digital Filipino Annual Xmas party yesterday–which was quite nice since it coincided with Janette Toral’s Filipina Writing Project awarding ceremony–so there was quite a lot of people there.

Saw some familiar faces and friends in the industry–of course Janette Toral of Digital Filipino and sister Jherlie of Posh Marketing, Gwen Nava of The Grape Bunch, as well as new couple Jay de Jesus of Titik Pilipino and Aileen Apollo of Google.

Got a nice mug out of the event (from the raffle) and of course free food (sponsored by E-games)!

10th Philippine Web Awards November 24, 2007

Filed under: Interests — jpabellon @ 6:44 pm

Went to the 10th Philippine Web Awards with office mates. I was invited as an entry screener once again which means it was my job to narrow down the entries into the top three to five for the semi-finals and finals. Another set of finals judges would then decide the winner for each category. According the Media G8way, the organizers of the event, a total of 69 Web sites made it to this year’s PWA finals, competing in 15 different categories, namely: Arts and Portfolio; Blogs; Celebrities and Personalities; Community and Portal; Corporate; E-commerce; E-LGUs- City; E-LGUs- Provincial; E-LGUs- Municipality; Lifestyle and Leisure; News and Media; Organizations; Personal; Recreation; Schools; and SMEs. The event was held at the Teatrino Bar and Restaurant, in the Promenade, Greenhills Commercial Complex.

The place was very nice–and brought the event back to the more intimate atmosphere of Webby’s in the past (I was actually in the 1st! and have attended most years since 1997 which back then was at The Hard Rock Cafe). We arrived a bit late because of the traffic–add to the fact that it was hard to park in the area. We arrived just in time to watch about 3 or 4 of the trophies given out by the hosts–Donita Rose and Gelli Mateo.

They were able to manage to bring the event to a nice close by moving the bands at the end (instead of being intermission numbers in the middle), in between the raffle. Somebody from Media G8way took over raffle duties from Mrs Guiterrez who passed away–and was able to make it as fun and entertaining as previous raffles (which has sort of become a tradition for the event).

Swing band Brass Monkeys on stage

Join the Club with their onstage antics

Entertainment for the night was provided by the Brass Monkeys–a brass band with a jazzy funk/swing repertoire and the always fun performance of Join the Club. This was Join the Club’s second time around. What was interesting was the lead singer mentioned that he was thankful that they got invited back and had just watched their performance on the last Webby’s on Youtube. Well my office mate Elvin happed to post that clip as we were their the last time and he happened to bring a camera with him. Well we got a kick of out of that.
They managed to bring the house down with their easy-to-swing-to tunes, their onstage antics, and that beatbox routine of their drummer. Overall it was an interesting night and we had a lot of fun.

Fake Steve Jobs November 17, 2007

Filed under: Interests — jpabellon @ 8:29 pm

Fake SteveIm having a hell of a time reading the Blog of Daniel Lyons, aka “Fake Steve Jobs.” The blog is funny in that it presents the famous CEO of Apple in a rather unflattering manner.

Many say however that the depiction of Steve is somewhat accurate as he is known to have a mercurial temper, is strongly opinionated–specially when it comes to design and image, and a believer in Zen teachings.

Read more about the blog here.

Also if you want to know more about Daniel Lyons, do a search on Youtube. Look for an interview of him by Guy Kawasaki, ex-Apple employee and entreprenur. Very funny! Until then, namaste!

Found an interesting website online that shows a map of the places youve been to in the Philippines. Just check the provinces where you have passed through or visited and it gives you a map and a grade. Here’s mine:

My Lakbayan grade is C-!How much of the Philippines have you visited? Find out at Lakbayan!

Web 2.0 tools December 13, 2006

Have been playing around with these newfangled Web 2.0 websites lately–and have decided to use them extensively for this blog. For our RSVP page, I used an online Web 2.0 form creator called Wufoo. For our photo album I used Picasa’s Web Album service. Am now toying with Zoho Writer and Zoho Sheets for the IT in Business class I am teaching for posting of online documents and spreadsheets. Currently I am toying with the ubiqitous YouTube for posting online our Wedding AVPs.

Last night of bachelorhood. December 8, 2006

Filed under: Interests, Wedding — jpabellon @ 8:08 pm

Things have been very busy lately… Have hardly had any time to post on our blog.

Last night Anna and I went to the Philippine Web Awards. I was one of the semi-finals judges–any my job was to screen the entries for the finals judges to judge the winner for each category.

Saw some familiar faces there. All in all it was a fun night with a memorable performance from the band “Join the Club.”

On another note, this is my last entry as a bachelor!

Am posting at the Robinsons Galleria, looking looking for a video adapter for our laptop so our AVP can play!

Anyway will post again soon…

Malling at 168 September 25, 2006

After our Binondo adventure, Anna and I decided we would stop by Divisoria at the famous 168 shopping mall to canvass for additional things we might be needing for our new place and/or our wedding.

As expected, the 168 Mall is a good place to buy commodity items at a good price. Most (if not all?) of the items are imported from China. Items can be bargained for a discount or bought at wholesale prices.

Will definitely need to go back to this place for our Christmas shopping :)
